Dr Bandiera’s research and creative professional activity has been built around three major themes: competency-based curriculum development, education measurement, and clinical pedagogy in the ambulatory setting.Dr Bandiera is heavily involved in the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) CanMEDS training paradigms and has introduced curriculum innovations to the emergency medicine residency program at the University of Toronto that map learning activities to competency-based goals and objectives. As a result of these initiatives, Dr Bandiera has been a speaker both nationally and internationally on residency programs. Dr Bandiera has also been invited to contribute to the Graduate Medical Education program by the American Accreditation Council. He has published research in behaviour of teaching excellence in emergency medicine, forming the basis for a national teaching workshop.
Dr Bandiera was the winner of the Original Research Award at the McMaster University Division of Emergency Medicine in 1997 and 1998, the PAIRO Senior Resident teaching Award at McMaster University in 1998, Best clinical teacher of the year of EM Residents at University of Toronto in 1999, the Fitzgerald Academy Clinical Clerkship Teaching Award at St Michael’s Hospital, the Donald Richards Wilson Award at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Associated Medical Services in 2004, the University of Toronto Anna Jarvis Teaching Award in 2005, and the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine Postgraduate Medical Education Teaching Award in 2006.
Dr Bandiera is the current Program Director of the FRCP(EM) Residency Program and holds the position of Assistant Professor of the Department of Medicine, and Clinician/Educator at the Researcher Wilson Centre for Research in Education at the University of Toronto. Dr Bandiera is also the current chair of the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians Trauma Committee and the current chair of the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians Injury and Illness Prevention Committee.
