SEMS 8th Annual Scientific Meeting, 19-20th Jan 2007

It is with pleasure that I report a most successful conclusion to the SEMS 8th Annual Scientific Meeting, 19-20th Jan 2007, held at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital. This year saw record participation in the pre-conference workshops, conference proper and abstract sessions. We also saw our largest yet participation from International and Regional speakers and participants.

On the 18 Jan 2007, we had our pre-conference workshop, ‘Paediatric Resuscitation and Life Support Workshop for Nurses and Paramedics’. This was the first time we were organizing this course in conjunction with at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital. There was a record subscription of 90 persons for this workshop and unfortunately, we had to limit the course size to 51 due to space constraints. In response to the enthusiastic interest shown in this course, SEMS will be co-organising this course again in 6 months together with KKWCH. Special thanks to Dr Darryl Lim and Dr Janil Puthucheery for taking the lead on this workshop.

18 Jan also marked the first time we had organized the ‘Advanced Emergency Airway Management Workshop’ as a pre-conference workshop. This was held at SGH LSTC and saw an enthusiastic turnout of 33 attendees. Special thanks to Dr Ng Yih Yng and Co-organisers, Dr Evelyn Wong and Dr Lee Wee Yee.

During the conference, we had a wide array of distinguished speakers including Dr. Jason Yap, Director of Healthcare Services, Singapore Tourism Board, as our plenary speaker. We also welcomed eminent Emergency Physicians, Dr. Ian Stiell from Ottawa, Canada, Dr. Anne-Maree Kelly and Dr. Marcus Kennedy from Australia and Mr Jerry Overton from Virginia, USA.

We are also encouraged by the record number of 31 abstracts submitted for presentation at the conference, as well as the enthusiastic response during the abstract sessions. Congratulations to the following winners of the free paper sessions:

Young Investigator Award : Dr Arif Tyebally
‘Danger in the Shopping Malls: Epidemiology of Escalator Related Injuries in Children in Singapore’

Best Student Free Paper : Mr How Kwang Yeong
‘Recall of Discharge Advice Given to Patients with Minor Head Injury Presenting to a Singapore Emergency Department’

Best Medical Free  Paper : Dr Marcus Ong
