SEMS 7th ASM

March 2006 marked an eventful period for the Society For Emergency Medicine In Singapore (SEMS), which helmed its 7th Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) and co-organized the 1st Asian Update In Resuscitation all within the same weekend.

Held at Changi General Hospital, the ASM programme kicked off with an inspiring keynote address by Prof. Colin Robertson, who shared his perspectives on the evolving roles of today’s emergency physicians.

One of his most memorable quotes reflects a sentiment shared by emergency medicine specialists all over the world: We may be exhausted; we may be frustrated; but we are never bored.

Judging from the widespread nodding and knowing smiles from the capacity audience, Prof. Robertson boosted quite a number of morales that day!

Other ASM highlights included an animated presentation by Drs. Tham Kum Ying and Tay Seow Yian on the Top Ten Articles of 2005, a well-received lecture about risk management by Clinical A/Prof. Peter Manning, a hilarious talk on Hospital-Acquired Bugs by Dr. Paul A. Tambyah, as well as a Nursing Symposium with an intriguing “CSI: Singapore” theme.

In the Medical Free Paper category, we received submissions from the United States, India, China and Turkey, in addition to those from our local colleagues.

Entries covered a wide variety of topics, from pre-hospital resuscitation to B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) to national servicemen attendances at the emergency department.

Below is a list of this year’s winners :

BST quiz winner : Dr Raymond Fong

Best Medical Free Paper : due to the excellent entries received, it was felt unfair that there should be only 1 prize regardless of the level of the participant. two prizes were subsequently awarded, one for the specialist level entrants and another for the MO / Resident level. Specialist winner: Dr Marcus Ong. Medical officer / Resident winner: Dr Sudeep Thekkayii (India).

Best Nursing / paramedic Free Paper : Mr Christopher Soh.

SEMS photo competition (special prize) : Dr Jimmy Goh

Best Local Faculty Speaker
: due to an administrative error, it was announced that the winner was A/Prof Paul Ananth Thambyah. The winner was actually Clin A/Prof Peter G Manning.

Our thanks to the ASM 2006 Organizing Committee for their hard work in making the event such a rousing success.

On to the pictures...
